Can Hypnotherapy Really Help Me to Stop Smoking?

The short answer to this question is a resounding “yes”! The only thing you will need in order to use Hypnosis to help you quit is the desire to change. If you approach a therapy session simply because you have been nagged by others then your chances of succeeding are slim.  However, if you seek out a solution because you know that you really want to stop smoking then it becomes such easier!

How Does it Work?

There are still some individuals who remain sceptical about the efficacy of Hypnosis in changing thoughts and behaviours.  However, there is an abundance of scientific evidence to the contrary. The truth can be found in a study of the way our brains work, as well as those parts of our brain that we are usually unaware of. Do you worry that you will “forget” to breathe when you are asleep? Of course not. Your brain’s autonomic nervous system has it all in hand and you do not need to engage your conscious mind to ensure that you continue to breathe.

In the same way, our mind is constantly receiving signals from your unconscious about many aspects of your daily life. You are constantly being exposed to new experiences, some of which are very pleasant, some not so much. When you start a behaviour that you think is pleasant and helpful to you a new neural pathway starts to build in your brain so that you can do it again. The more you do it, the more automatic it becomes. Unfortunately, the same is true for habits, thoughts and behaviours that are not helpful to you. Your mind is not a policeman or caring teacher, shielding you from dangerous or risky situations. It simply obeys the thoughts and feelings you give it. So, somewhere along the line, you thought that smoking was a pleasurable thing to do and a new neural pathway was constructed in your brain to keep you repeating the action. Hypnosis works to change the connections in your brain and to build new neural pathways that supersede the old wanted ones.

What to Expect

The objective of a Hypnotherapy session for quitting smoking is to replace the desire to smoke with a new thought pattern that gives you a stronger desire to stop. In order to do this, your therapist will take you, through talking, into a state of deep relaxation, often referred to as “trance”. You will still be in complete control of everything that happens, and you will still be aware of where you are and what is happening at all times.

During this state of deep relaxation, your unconscious mind is extremely receptive to suggestions and new thoughts. You will feel, see, hear and experience all of the positive effects of quitting smoking and your mind will become “reprogrammed” to avoid cigarettes or vaping devises.

Yes, it really can be that simple! Most people require only one session of Hypnotherapy to help them to stop smoking for good.  That’s right you can become a non-smoker in one session! What have you got to lose?
